Welcome to our Reception web page! All information about class arrangements and organisation can be found on the class' page for the relevant term.
This document is a guide to your child’s learning throughout the EYFS. It takes you through the learning expectations for each age band, and can help you to support your child’s learning and development.
Our topic this term is My Family. It would be lovely if the children could complete a minimum of 4 pieces of home learning, two before half term and two before Christmas. We will proudly display all learning!
A very warm welcome to all of our lovely Reception children and especially to those who are new to Berkeley Primary School. Please do catch any of the friendly Reception staff if you have any questions at all. Our main Autumn topic will be ‘Our Family’ which we will share with Little Jesters, this will give us a chance to get to know the children. If there is anyway at all you think you could help with this topic, do please let us know.
Housekeeping information about Reception:
Mrs Baker will teach the class Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and Mrs Lanceley will teach the class on Tuesdays. Miss Mundy is the full time teaching assistant.
Please label all items of uniform and school equipment, including water bottles and lunch boxes, with your child’s name.
PE: Reception’s PE slots are Tuesday and Friday. Please try to keep their PE kit in school whenever possible as times can change. We will send them home if they are muddy or dirty, but if not we will send them home during October half term. If you would rather wash them more often please do take them but remember to return them.
Please ensure that your child has wellies and water bottles in school, if they forget we do have clean cups and spare wellies that the children can use so don’t worry.
Wow Vouchers: Your child will bring home a page of wow-vouchers. Please use these to celebrate any achievements at home to share with the class. These can be about whatever you wish, swimming lessons, learning a new skill, we really don’t mind. If you need more please let me know or find some more on our web page.
Phonics Home Learning:
N.B. This will not start immediately as we will only start phonic teaching when we feel the children are settled and ready to do so.
Word lists will be sent home every Tuesday and need to be practiced at home by the following Monday if possible please ready for their new list. We will practice them in school too however they will not be ‘tested.’
Reading: Your child will choose a picture book and a simple reading book every week, for you to read and talk about with your child. Please aim to ready every day, it doesn’t have to be the whole book, and write a short comment in the ‘remarks’ box in your child’s reading record. (To come.) Please note that you can write about any book you share with your child- it doesn’t have to be a school one. We will give lots of praise and encouragement for any reading and sharing of books that the children do.
Phonics Books/ Sheets: As we introduce each letter we will add it to your child’s phonics book so that you can practise at home. We will also send home an activity sheet. This can be completed if you wish and does not need to be returned to school.
Houses: The children will be put into our schoolhouses: Tyndale (Yellow), Fitzhardinge (Green), Jenner (Red) and Scott (Blue.) The children can earn house points for good behaviour and learning. If we reward the children with a house point, we will put a small dot sticker on their uniform. Please ask them why they received it and praise them at home too!
Groups: We will also put the children into learning groups: Clever Cookies, Genius Gems, Super Stars, Bright Sparks, Master Minds and Whizz Kids. The groups are completely mixed groups to help us organize the school day.

Dear Parents/Carers Welcome back to new term and New Year. We would like to thank all of you who attended our nativity, sharing afternoon and for all our lovely Christmas gifts. Thank you very much! Our new Spring Term topic is, All Around the World and we are looking forward to learning lots of new skills. If you can help us in any way with our topic please let us know.
Star AwardsOn the last day of term, we had the very hard job of choosing one child to have the Star Award and to receive a small star badge to wear on their uniform. This is a very special award for good behaviour, effort, kindness, manners and all round loveliness. We can only choose one child per term, so only 3 a year, and with our lovely children in reception, this is a challenging decision. The star award for the Autumn Term was awarded to Harry Terrett. Well done Harry!
Home Learning:The Spring Home Learning Grid was sent out just before Christmas. I have hopefully attached another one here. We were very impressed with last term’s and are looking forward to seeing the children’s creations. It would be lovely if the children could complete a minimum of 4 pieces of home learning, two before half term and two before Easter. We will proudly display all learning.
A reminder for housekeeping in Reception: Blue phonics books, reading records and word tubs are needed in school every day please. Reading records are checked every Wednesday when books are changed and children are rewarded for reading at least 3 times at home. (This needs to be recorded in their reading record please and can be phonics books, word lists, word tubs, mats or books from home.)
PE sessions are Tuesdays and Fridays. Wellington boots are needed in school please.
Teaching Arrangements:Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: Mrs Baker and Mrs Houser Tuesdays: Mrs Lanceley and Mrs Houser Every afternoon and all day Friday: Miss Mundy Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings: Mrs Coombes
Junk Modelling/ Packaging/ MagazinesPlease could you keep very small items of packaging for our junk modelling area? Ideal items are toothpaste boxes, make up boxes, tops of deoderant or small plastic bottles for example. We would like to increase the amount of real packaging and food in our Wendy house. Please send in full tins, pasta, rice etc. if you can. If you buy any magazines for your children please send them in when you are finished with them and we will add them to our reading areas. Our topic for the Summer Term is, Healthy Me! If you can help in anyway with this topic, please let us know, such as visiting the class to talk about your job if this relates to being healthy or showing us your healthy shopping.
We are very excited to let you know that we have organised Reception’s first school trip!
We are hoping to visit Redwood, which is an area of 50 acres of woodland and 20 acres of meadowland; very much an outdoor educational experience. Every visit is led by a professional Education Officer who will plan and lead a day of experiential, outdoor learning based on our topic of Healthy Me. Please find a copy of our trip letter below.
Please find attached our new home learning grid. It would be lovely if the children could complete a minimum of 4 pieces of home learning, two before half term and two before the summer holidays. We will proudly display all learning.
